The SPI timber company owns 1.9 million acres, making it the second largest private landowner in North America. The bulk of this land lies in the forests of northern California. The company’s logging practices are certified sustainable by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Earth First! is an international movement dedicated to using direct action to protect threatened ecosystems from runaway resource extraction. The activists cite two examples of SPI’s clear-cutting and old-growth logging plans in Humboldt County. One, a 245 acre logging plan in the Mattole River and Bear River watersheds, and another in Redwood Creek totaling 241 acres. Earth First is the leader in organizing tree sits throughout the US.

Below is a Wiki Link trail that will give you a quick understanding of this world:

The geodesic sphere ground structures are quick to assemble in any terrain. Depicted here are five Sequoia Model structures in a circle with interconnecting walk ways. The structures make for a great application of community living, meditation or spa activities. With native landscaping the footings can be bursting with life and greenery. Wether your choice of flora & fauna is a creeping conifer, forest ferns or a food garden the geodesic architecture makes for a architecturally interesting backdrop and arbor. Vines can be trained up and along the geodesic structure to engulf the facade transforming it into a 360 garden environment. Think of the possibilities, this is just on the ground!

Treehuggers is a new series concept developed and produced by Ronin Media House.

It chronicles the work of Dustin Feider of O2 Treehouse and his unique crew of tree house builders. With O2 Treehouse, Dustin, JP, Mark, and Marley create and build both custom and pre-designed architectural tree houses in a sustainable fashion with a cradle-to-cradle ethic.

This work has taken Dustin and the O2 Treehouse crew across the country and is currently in process of expanding beyond borders into international eco tourism.

Please enjoy this sizzle reel as we seek to build momentum for producing this series in 2012

The clients’ major desire was to transform their existing back yard into a space suitable to entertain a party of 200 but still retain an intimate feeling for guests in small numbers. A beautiful open plan ranch home set on a triangle cul de sac lot, the property’s best asset was the densely wooded acre along the back third portion of the land, facing the exposed basement. Located just outside of Milwaukee WI, this locale enjoys the full richness and beauty of the changing seasons.

O2 Treehouse’s approach was to create a fully immersed forest environment that would tie in their pre-existing deck, with a size increase that would support larger numbers yet still remain small enough not to deter from the natural beauty of the garden/forest environment. It was important to create an access point between the gardens in the yard and the 8? raised deck space, while still maintaining a lofted and inaccessible treehouse-like feeling. This was achieved via a slowly stepped side entry that blends conversation from the deck into the side gardens. A shift in the stain color down the middle of the deck subtly outlines a walk way to direct the natural flow of traffic from the deck’s patio entry to the 27? cat walk. This ‘yellow brick road’ then extends from the edge of the deck into the heart of the woods, connecting to one of O2 Treehouse’s pre-designed geodesic models (The Sequoia).

The Copper Nest Sequoia was also customized with 45 steel awnings, given a rust patina to lend a weathered, bucolic aesthetic, and a fully screened in canopy to protect it’s guests from those that buzz and bite.

The client came to me wanting a design aesthetic similar to that of the horizontal slatted Lotus. However, once I did a site audit and saw their steep terraced hill location with a very vertical aesthetic I realized that horizontal slats wouldn’t make sense with the environment. So instead, I produced a few different scopes of vertically slatted treehouses, and decided upon this dual level barrel. They loved that it was an open deck but with a cozy clubhouse type feel.

Hung in a California Live Oak, the construction of this treehouse consists of two doug fir decks supported by steel rings. The first level is reached by rope ladder entry leading to a platform where you can step onto first floor (this is a safety system, to keep anyone from falling through the entry). There are large steps leading between the two floors, and the upper deck is accessible through via trap door. One of the step serves as a large storage container for the kids toys. Encircling the platforms are 80 curved 1? x 8? wood slats, which are tilted to create a blind effect. The structure is suspended by cable from a girdle, which stabilizes it against the tree.
